TAYLOR COMMUNITY HISTORY
Taylor Community was incorporated in 1907 as The Laconia Home for the Aged. It was established by a group of people in the community who were concerned that there were older people in the area without family and who were in need of support. Shortly after the organization was formed, it received the gift of a house on Court Street as the Home’s first residence. A matron was hired and the work of the Organization was begun. The Home attracted the interest of Mr. Edward Taylor of Boston who became its first major benefactor. Mr. Taylor was so impressed with the good work of the Home and the need for larger quarters that he bought the land on Union Avenue and paid for the building of a new “Home”. The present building was dedicated to Mr. Taylor’s parents, Stephen and Almira Taylor, on August 2, 1910. |

Many changes have taken place over the ensuing years. Both the north and the south corridors represent additions to the original building. The Oscar and Edith George Infirmary Wing was added in 1979. The Community Room was added in 1981. In 1984, we completed our “Satellite Housing” which consists of 14 independent TownHomes located behind the Home on Taylor Home Drive. 1987 saw the completion of another major addition/renovation to our Infirmary and is now known as the Atrium. In 1988, an additional 40 TownHomes were built on adjacent property and, together with the former “Satellite Housing”, became known as the Ledges at Taylor Home Retirement Community. In 1989, we built a new dish room and redecorated the expanded Dining Room of the traditional Taylor Home. The new Beauty Shop, together with the refurbishing and redecoration of the Community Room, was completed in 1990. In 1992, we added Phase III to our Ledges Community. The combination of Phases I, II, and III bring the total number of the Ledges TownHomes to 123. In December of 1991, we welcomed the first of our new Residents to Spokesfield Common, our 14 TownHome Retirement Community located in Center Sandwich, approximately 23 miles from our Laconia campus. Also located at Spokesfield Common (but not owned by Taylor Home) is a 10‑unit apartment complex that provides rent subsidies, along with the Doris Benz Community Center on land donated by the Taylor Community, which serves as a general meeting place not only for Residents at Spokesfield Common but for other Sandwich residents as well. November 1994 is when we welcomed the first Resident to our 60,000 square foot Congregate Living Center(CLC) now renamed "Ledgeview". This wonderful building serves the entire Taylor Community by providing large common areas for meetings and activities. It is the home of Independent Residents who reside in our four garden style apartments. Ledgeview also has 22 In 1999, 14 TownHomes were completed at WestWynde in Moultonborough. This campus is located off Route 171. In 2000, we welcomed our first Residents to Back Bay, a neighborhood of 20 TownHomes, located in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. In December of 2004, Meeting House Commons in Pembroke was added to the Taylor Community family. |
